Four in a Row

Drop discs into the grid and be the first to connect four.

How to play

Click a column (or press keys 1–7) to drop a disc. It falls to the lowest free space. Connect four of your discs in a line – horizontally, vertically or diagonally – to win. If the grid fills up first, the game is a draw.

Strategy tips

  • Take the centre. The middle column is part of more possible lines than any other.
  • Look one move ahead for your opponent. Before dropping, check whether your disc gives them a space to win on top of it.
  • Create two threats. Two open spots that would each complete a line cannot both be blocked.
  • Mind odd and even rows. The first player usually wants threats on odd rows (counting from the bottom), the second player on even rows.

Computer levels

Easy sometimes plays randomly, Medium looks four moves ahead, and Hard looks seven moves ahead – going first and taking the centre gives you the best chance.

FAQ

Can the first player always win?

Yes, with perfect play the first player wins by starting in the centre column. In practice, mistakes decide most games.
