Solitaire tips: win more Klondike games

Klondike rewards patience and a few good habits. These tips raise your win rate in both Draw 1 and Draw 3.

1. Free the face-down cards first

Every face-down card in the tableau is information you don’t have. When you have a choice of moves, prefer the one that turns over a card – and prefer columns with the most hidden cards, because they take longest to clear.

2. Don’t empty a column too early

An empty column only accepts a King. If you empty one without a King ready, you have wasted space. Empty columns are most valuable when you can choose which King goes in.

3. Pick the right King

When you can move a red or a black King into an empty column, look at which Queens are available. Choosing the King that matches a Queen you can move next keeps the sequence growing.

4. Play to the foundations with care

Aces and 2s can always go up right away. Higher cards may still be useful in the tableau as a place to put lower cards of the other colour. A safe rule: move a card to the foundation when both cards of the opposite colour one rank lower are already there.

5. Prefer tableau moves to waste moves

Moving cards within the tableau often uncovers new cards; playing from the waste only uses up a card you could take later. Do the tableau work first when both are possible.

6. Draw 3 is about order

In Draw 3 only every third card is playable on each pass. If you go through the stock without playing a card, the next pass shows exactly the same cards. Playing even one card from the waste shifts the order and reveals different cards next time – sometimes that is the move that unlocks the game.

7. Use undo to learn

This version has unlimited undo. When a deal looks stuck, step back to the last real decision and try the other option. You will start to see which choices matter.

8. Know when a game is lost

Not every deal can be won. If you have cycled the stock several times with no new moves, start a new game – practice beats frustration.
