Word Guess

Find the hidden five-letter word in six guesses. Play today’s word, then keep going in Unlimited mode.

How to play

  • Type any five-letter English word and press Enter.
  • Each tile then changes colour: green means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but somewhere else, and grey means it isn’t in the word.
  • Letters can repeat. If you guess a letter twice and the answer has it once, only one of your tiles lights up.
  • You have six guesses. The keyboard keeps track of what you’ve learned about each letter.

Daily word and Unlimited

Daily word gives everyone the same word each day, and your streak grows for every day you solve it. Unlimited deals a new random word whenever you like, with its own statistics. Your progress is saved in your browser, so you can close the page and finish later.

Tips

  • Start strong. Words like RAISE, ARISE and IRATE test the most common letters. Across our answer list, RAISE leaves about 50 possible words on average after the first guess, while AUDIO leaves about 130.
  • Use new letters early. On guess two, try letters you haven’t tested yet instead of repeating known ones.
  • Remember repeats. About one answer in three has a repeated letter, as in SHELL or LEVEL.
  • Think about the ending. Many answers end in E or Y.
