Reaction Time Test

Wait for the box to turn green, then tap as fast as you can. Five tries give you an average in milliseconds.

How it works

  1. Tap the box (or press Space) to start.
  2. The box turns red. Wait – it will turn green after a random delay of about one to four seconds.
  3. Tap the moment it turns green. Tapping too early doesn’t count; just tap again to retry.
  4. After five tries you get your average and a rating. Your best average is saved in this browser.

What is a good reaction time?

Most people score between 200 and 300 milliseconds on a test like this. Under 200 ms is very fast. Your device also matters: screens, mice and especially touchscreens can add tens of milliseconds, so compare scores on the same device.

How to get a better score

  • Keep your finger resting on the screen or mouse button so you only need to press.
  • Look at the centre of the box rather than the edges.
  • Don’t try to guess the timing – the delay is random, so guessing usually means tapping early.
  • Take the test when you are rested; tiredness slows reactions noticeably.
